01

A flexible family shortlist

Algarve, Portugal

Compare Tavira and Alvor if you prefer a gentler base, then price the transfer and beach access from your actual hotel. Our planning judgement: a walkable location can beat a remote hotel with a lower nightly rate.

Evidence behind the shortlist

The Post Office’s 2026 Family Holiday Report placed the Algarve first for its selected local-spending basket. That measures holiday purchases, not flights or a full holiday. Which?’s 2026 article reports an 82% customer score for both Tavira and Alvor.

Before booking: Check how you reach the beach, evening transport and recent reviews mentioning noise.

For scenery and a slower pace

Kefalonia, Greece

Compare a stay near the beach with an inland bargain that needs a car. Argostoli, Skala and smaller villages offer different holiday rhythms; choose the base around the trip you want.

Evidence behind the shortlist

Which?’s Greek-island survey awarded Kefalonia 85%. The underlying research is from November 2022, not a fresh 2027 review. Its 2026 value article also shortlisted the island.

Before booking: Confirm gradients, transport frequency and car-hire totals. A beautiful island is not automatically the cheapest choice.

03

A package-price comparison

Costa Blanca, Spain

Start with the whole region rather than one famous resort. Compare the atmosphere, hotel location and beach access in each town; a cheap package is useful only if the base suits you.

Evidence behind the shortlist

In a Which? price study published December 2025 for summer 2026, Costa Blanca had the lowest average among the destinations compared. This is historical price evidence, not a summer 2027 offer or a traveller-review score.

Before booking: Check whether bags, transfers, meals and local taxes are included. Read recent hotel reviews for your travel style.

04

A local-spending comparison

Sunny Beach, Bulgaria

Worth comparing for a beach holiday where day-to-day costs matter. Choose your exact hotel area carefully if you prefer quieter evenings: a resort-wide budget ranking cannot tell you how noisy a street is.

Evidence behind the shortlist

The 2026 Post Office family report ranked Sunny Beach second for its selected local-spending basket. This supports a value shortlist, not a hotel quality rating or a total-trip price.

Before booking: Look for recent family or couple reviews matching your needs, plus walking distances and transfer costs.

Town life alongside the sunshine

Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife

Compare a town-based stay with a beach resort if you enjoy cafés and sightseeing as well as pool time. Check the beach type and distance rather than assuming every seaside hotel has a sandy beach outside.

Evidence behind the shortlist

Which?’s Canary resort guide, updated 27 October 2026, gives Puerto de la Cruz 77%. This is a destination survey result, not a rating for an individual hotel.

Before booking: Compare room cooling, pool arrangements and slopes around the accommodation. Summer prices must be checked for your dates.

Compare the complete holiday cost.

Use the same dates, number of nights, travellers and room type for every quote. Add return flights, bags, seats, both airport transfers, accommodation, meals not included, local taxes, activities and insurance. Include parking and any overnight airport stay.

Illustrative example, not an offer: a £420-per-person package for two is £840; add £80 extras and £140 meals for £1,060. A DIY trip at £280 flights + £480 hotel + £90 transfers + £80 bags + £140 meals totals £1,070. Here the package is £10 less. Your real quotes may differ.

Search flexible dates in June, July, August and September where you can, without assuming any month will always be cheapest. Read cancellation terms and check travel eligibility and current official destination advice before paying.

A good score is only the starting point.

Look at the date

Prioritise recent reviews for the same season. Renovation, management changes and building work can make older praise less useful.

Match your travel style

A nightlife location may delight one traveller and frustrate a family. Look for recurring comments about noise, access, cleanliness and transfers.

Separate the ratings

Destination survey scores do not rate your hotel, airline or package. Confirm the exact property and room type before buying.

A lighter bag. A brighter summer.

Start with what you own. A suitable bag, refillable bottle and a wash-bag organiser may be more useful than a suitcase full of extras.
