1. Before you pay for a flight

2. The week before departure

3. Your first airport, step by step

  1. Arrive by the airline's recommended time. Leave room for queues and transport disruption; check bag-drop and boarding deadlines separately.
  2. Find departures. Use the flight number on the airport screens. If required, go to the airline desk or bag drop before security.
  3. Follow security staff instructions. Keep your boarding pass accessible, then repack without blocking the queue.
  4. Watch the gate screens. Gates can change. Boarding closes before departure time, so stay close enough to reach it.
  5. On arrival: follow signs for passport control if applicable, then baggage reclaim and customs. Use your prechecked transport plan.

Airport procedures vary. Airline and airport instructions take priority over this general checklist.

4. Romania at Christmas: your preparation page

Write down your airport: GHV for Brașov or OTP for Bucharest. They are not interchangeable. Add the total transfer price, the last departure you can realistically catch, and a backup overnight option.

For a Brașov base, plan a town day, a separate Bran Castle day and a flexible mountain day. Check holiday openings directly. Snow and ski operations are not promised; warm cafés and indoor sightseeing make a useful weather backup.

Pack layers, waterproof footwear with grip, gloves, chargers and essential medicines. Check mountain conditions with local experts and Salvamont; do not treat an old travel video as route-safety guidance.

5. Paying for useful extras

Buy a checked bag only if your measured packing needs it. Consider paid seats if sitting together matters to your group, and read the airline's family seating rules. For private transfers or guided mountain activities, verify the operator, cancellation policy, meeting point and what the price includes.
